Brieven Piazza: A Coherent Fusion of Styles

An Abstract Public Square Inspired by Mondrian and Square Kufic Calligraphy

The Brieven Piazza stands out from other public squares due to its ability to seamlessly blend different artistic styles. It challenges the notion that styles like impressionism and abstraction cannot coexist harmoniously. Upon closer inspection, the square reveals a complex design featuring rectangular sculptures displayed under a layer of transparent reinforced triple-layered security glass underground. Randomly distributed green grass rectangles, each representing half the area of the glass sculpture, incorporate Mondrian's idea of presenting nature.

Above ground, abstract sculptures in the form of Arabic Kufic letters serve as a liaison between the cubism of the layout and the underground sculptures. The use of Arabic font, known for its lack of curves, ornamentation, and extravagance, adds an ethnic touch to the design. The combination of impressionist abstract elements with geometrical combinations embodies the use of lines, squares, and rectangles.

The Brieven Piazza offers an abstract landscape with a Mondrian-style layout, providing space for strolling and abstract public art furniture for seating. It creates an interactive and engaging environment for visitors to enjoy and appreciate the fusion of different artistic styles.

The design process for the Brieven Piazza began in June 2013 with research and conceptual trials. The architectural detailed drawings, including layout, plans, elevations, and sections, started in December 2013 and were completed by March 2014. The project required meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of both impressionism and abstraction, as well as Islamic design elements.

Blending Islamic features with Mondrian's abstract approach presented a creative and technical challenge. These styles are fundamentally different, and the goal was not to superficially combine elements but to harmoniously blend them without undermining their individuality. The result is a design that successfully merges the two styles, creating a coherent artwork that goes beyond obvious comprehension.

The Brieven Piazza has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design in 2014. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Brieven Piazza stands as a testament to the power of fusion and the ability to create something truly remarkable by embracing diversity and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.
